What to know before you order
Cleaning in Bulgaria has two rhythms. The city one, in Sofia, Plovdiv, Burgas and Varna, is like anywhere: regular cleaning for families and offices all year, a deep clean before holidays and when tenants change, after renovation in new builds, and in short-term rentals between guests all year round. The resort one, in Sunny Beach, Nessebar and Sveti Vlas, follows the summer guests: rental apartments are cleaned between check-out and check-in on the same day, and in spring and autumn they get a deep clean when the home is opened and closed. The tightest weeks there run from late June to late August, when one cleaner covers several apartments a day with a two-to-three-hour window between guests; owners therefore line up someone for the whole summer as early as May.
The place makes the dirt different. In the big cities it is dust from the street and building sites, especially fine in Sofia and Plovdiv in winter, poplar fluff in June, soot on the windows facing the boulevard, and building dust in new blocks where the neighbours' finishing drags on for years. By the sea it is sand from the beach in the hallway and on terraces, salt leaving a dull film on the sea-facing glass, and damp in an apartment shut for the winter, which grows mould in the bathroom, the wardrobes and on the silicone within a few months. So the first clean of spring in a seaside home is a deep one: air the place, wash the terrace and windows, treat the mould, clean the sofas and mattresses; in the city a deep clean is booked before holidays, after renovation and on moving in.
