Repairs in Bulgaria are ordered by two kinds of clients. Some live in the home all year β€” in the panel and new-build blocks of Sofia, Plovdiv, Burgas and Varna, in houses in the villages around β€” and renovate as anywhere: a bathroom, a kitchen, new pipes and wiring, finishing in a new build. The others own rental or holiday apartments, most of them in the seaside resorts of Sunny Beach, Nessebar and Sveti Vlas, and often live in another city or abroad: for them it is a refresh before the guests, new windows and doors, fixing what the season wore out.

The calendar depends on the place. In the big cities renovation runs all year: the warm months are for windows, facades and terraces, winter for the work inside, and in new builds the finishing starts as soon as the building is handed over. In the resorts the calendar is reversed: big jobs run from October to April, when apartments stand empty and complexes do not restrict noise or deliveries; from May to September only small and urgent work is planned there. The place also sets the typical jobs: in older city blocks it is leaks on the risers, old wiring and floors; by the sea, damp and mould on north-facing walls, rust on railings and fittings, swollen doors, so a pre-season refresh includes an anti-fungal treatment too.

Describe the job by trade β€” that decides who you are looking for. A leak, a tap or a water heater is a plumber; sockets, the fuse board and lights an electrician; hanging, assembling and small fixes a handyman; walls and ceilings a painter; new furniture a furniture fitter.
