What to know before you order

Tutoring in Bulgaria has two big audiences. Bulgarian families look for a tutor for the matriculation exams and the national external assessments (NVO) after grades 4, 7 and 10, for maths and English, and for entry to a language or maths high school β€” most of all in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas, where the strong schools are hardest to get into. Families who moved here β€” to the big cities and to the resorts β€” want their children to keep up with a Bulgarian school: Bulgarian as a second language, maths and other subjects in Bulgarian β€” or to continue a school programme from home online. Adults mostly learn Bulgarian for daily life and paperwork, or English for work.

Lessons run at home, in a cafΓ© or online. For a child a tutor who comes to the house usually works better; for adults online saves the commute. Say the age or level, the goal β€” a school test, the state matriculation exams (DZI), conversation β€” and how many lessons a week you want; ask for a trial lesson before agreeing a course. Music lessons β€” piano, guitar, singing β€” are booked here too, mostly for children after school, at the pupil's home or the teacher's.

Frequently asked questions

Can my child get help with a Bulgarian school here?βŒ„

Yes β€” this is one of the most common requests. A tutor can teach Bulgarian as a second language and go through school subjects in Bulgarian, so the child keeps up in class. Say the grade and which subjects are hardest.

Is there a Bulgarian teacher for adults who just moved?βŒ„

Yes. Lessons for adults usually focus on everyday situations β€” shops, doctors, municipal offices β€” and on reading forms. Say your current level and how many hours a week you have.

How do I prepare for the Bulgarian state exams (DZI)?βŒ„

Look for a tutor who has prepared students for the matriculation exams in your subject, start several months ahead, and agree a plan by topics. Ask how they track progress β€” mock tests are a good sign.

Is a trial lesson possible?βŒ„

Usually yes. A trial lesson shows whether the tutor's pace and style suit you or your child before you commit to a course; agree in advance whether it is paid.

How much does tutor & lessons cost in Bulgaria?βŒ„

The price depends on the scope and complexity. Describe your task in the form β€” providers send offers with prices and you pick the right one. Posting a request is free.
