Moving in Sofia: parking, lifts and narrow stairs

A move in Sofia rarely depends on how much you own. It depends on where the van can stop, whether the wardrobe fits in the lift, and how long the drive takes. Settle those in advance and the price will not change on the day.
Where the van stops
Parking in and around the centre is paid: up to two hours in the blue zone, up to four in the green. Check current hours and payment for your street with the Urban Mobility Centre (Център за градска мобилност).
- The van pays to park like any car, so on a long load someone has to watch the time.
- On the narrow streets of the centre it often cannot stop at the door, and carrying further takes time.
- Agree in advance where it can stop legally. A fine or a tow costs more than any surcharge.
Panel blocks
In Lyulin, Mladost, Druzhba, Nadezhda, Obelya and Studentski Grad there are two usual cases.
A low block with no lift. Everything goes by the stairs, and the price depends on the floor at both addresses.
A tall block with a small lift. Boxes fit; the fridge, a wardrobe and a long sofa often do not. Measure the lift and your largest items.
Stairwells are narrow, with tight turns, so a large wardrobe usually has to come apart. Decide what can be dismantled and whether to reassemble it.
Old blocks and new builds
Older blocks in the centre and Lozenets often have no lift, or a tiny one added later, with steep stairs and narrow doors. A photo of the stairwell helps the movers judge how many people to send.
New builds in Lozenets, Manastirski Livadi and Krastova Vada often set move-in rules for the lift: fixed hours or protective panels. Ask the building manager before you book a time.
Getting across town
A move between districts runs along busy boulevards and the ring road. Rush hour and roadworks make the drive longer; if you pay by the hour, that is your money. Pick an early morning or a weekend and check the route on the day.
What to tell the movers
- both addresses, the floors, and whether there is a lift and its size;
- whether a van can stop at the entrance (or in a courtyard), and which zone the street is in;
- the largest furniture with sizes, boxes and heavy appliances;
- photos of the large items and the stairwell.
Also ask who pays for parking, whether floors without a lift cost extra, and whether the drive is included. For how movers price a job, see how much movers cost.
Common questions
Will my fridge fit in the lift? Often not: lifts in many panel blocks are small. Measure the lift car and the fridge to know whether it goes by the stairs.
How long can the van park in the blue zone? Up to two hours, and up to four in the green zone. Check the current hours with the Urban Mobility Centre.
When is the best time to move? Early on a weekday morning or at the weekend, when traffic is lighter. The end of the month, when leases run out, is the busiest time.
Can the movers take away old furniture too? Some do, if you say so in advance. Building rubble is a separate service.
